Studio Gang’s „Hive“ opens in the National Buildings Museum
Hive, the installation of Summer Gang, Studio Gang 2017, was released to the public at the National Museum of Buildings in Washington, built of 2,551 silver-magenta glued paper tubes, Hive invites visitors to explore their senses in a series of dome-shaped formations of the Chamber, each in size Reflects a unique sound signature.
Using structural paper tubes commonly used in construction as a concrete formwork material, Hive assumes its shape from the gimbal physics that inspired some of the world’s major structures such as the Gate Gate Arch in St. John’s. Louis and Brunelleschi’s Dome at the Florence Cathedral in Italy and the Vernacular buildings such as Musgum’s mud in Cameroon.
The installation is played on the scales in surprising ways, and its colossal external presence gives way to a round intimacy inside. Situated in the expansive area of the large hall of the museum, mountain forms can be populated from the ground level or viewed from the balcony on the upper floors. The okulus, which is at the top of the three domes, attracts the visitor’s attention to the peak ceilings of the Great Hall, while the spiral pattern of the composite tubes creates a perspective bend of optical illusion.
The interior, tubular instruments and sounds made by acoustic engineer John Tevksburi and percussionist Steve Bloom increase the sounds that are heard in smaller chambers, which leads to a dynamic listening experience.
“Within the chamber, visitors are invited to explore how the structure can modify and reflects the sound,” explains Studio Gang. “The whole structure works acoustically like purification in the forest – some sounds are reflected back, while others pass through the pipes, creating an intimate space within the large field of the Great Hall.”
The sensory journey continues in the visual; The outer surface of each surface is painted with reflective silver, and the interior appears as the pop pink inspiration of January’s female March, which was the largest non-violent protest in US history.
